- Adhesive strips or glue
- Clean workspace with good lighting
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1:
Power off the phone by holding the volume and power button simultaneously.
Remove the SIM card tray with a paperclip or a SIM card tool.
Step 2:
Slide an opening pick around the perimeter of the phone to break through and loosen the adhesive holding the outer case in place.
Use an opening tool to release the clips securing the front and back casing together.
Don't remove the case yet!
Step 3:
Use an [guide|11677|iOpener|new_window=true] over the Motorola Logo for about 1-2 minutes to warm and loosen the adhesive to separate it from the outer casing.
Gently remove the plastic outer case, while holding your finger onto the Motorola logo where the fingerprint sensor is.
Set the outer case aside.
Step 4:
Use a Torx T5 screwdriver to remove nineteen 3.9 mm screws from the midframe.
Be careful not to lose them! They are very small.
Step 5:
Remove the plastic mother board cover.
Step 6:
Place a spudger or an opening tool under the edge of the battery connector and pry straight up to disconnect it.
Remove the battery cable using an opening pick or tweezers. It may also pop right off.
Slide a thin, ESD-safe pry tool or angled tweezers under the metal neck of the coaxial cable connector (as close to the head as possible) and lift straight up from the board.
Step 7:
Heat an [guide|11677|iOpener|new_window=true] and place it on the edges of the screen to soften the adhesive.
Heat the iOpener for 30 seconds at a time. Let it sit on the phone edges for 1-2 minutes each.
Be careful not to overheat the iOpener as it can explode. It also gets pretty hot, so use oven mitts if necessary.
Step 8:
Insert an opening pick under the screen very gently.
It should insert easily. Do not use excessive force.
If it is too difficult to insert, apply the iOpener to the edges of the screen.
Slide the pick around all edges to pry off the screen.
Step 9:
Remove the screen gently and any residual adhesive.
If the screen doesn't come off easily by hand, use a [product|IF145-361|suction tool|new_window=true] to pry it off.
