Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Heat the rear glass

Step 1 - Image 1

A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may also be used, but be careful not to overheat the phone—the display and internal battery are both susceptible to heat damage.

Step 2: Create a gap

Step 2 - Image 1
Step 2 - Image 2

Secure a suction handle to the right edge of the rear glass, as close to the edge as possible.

If the rear glass is cracked, the suction handle may not stick. Try [https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/4MmKE22Cy2MavVZU|lifting it with strong tape|new_window=true], or superglue the suction handle in place and allow it to cure so you can proceed.

Lift the rear glass with the suction handle to create a small gap between the rear glass and the frame.

If you have trouble creating a gap, apply more heat to further soften the adhesive. Follow the [https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iOpener+Heating/25705|iOpener|new_window=true] instructions to avoid overheating.

Insert an opening pick into the gap you created.

Slide the opening pick to the top right corner to slice the adhesive.

Leave the opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 3: Slice the adhesive

If the adhesive becomes hard to cut, it has most likely cooled down. Use your [link|https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iOpener+Heating/25705|new_window=true|iOpener] for one to two minutes to reheat it.

Insert a third opening pick at the bottom right corner of your phone.

Step 11 - Image 2

Use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the SIM card tray cable from the motherboard.

Step 12 - Image 2

Slide an opening pick underneath the graphite film at the bottom end of your phone and carefully separate it from the battery and loudspeaker assembly.

Remove the graphite film.

Step 13: Free the battery

Step 13 - Image 1
Step 13 - Image 2

During the following step do not fold the cables sharply and only bend them to avoid cable damage.

Fold the SIM card tray flex cable towards the charging port in order to get free access to the battery.

You might want to use a small piece of tape to temporarily stick the cable onto your working surface to avoid accidentally damaging it during the battery removal.

Step 14: Peel off the battery pull-tabs

Step 14 - Image 2

Take care not to puncture or bend the battery with your tool—a punctured or bent battery may leak dangerous chemicals or cause a thermal event.

Use a pair of blunt nose [product|IF145-020|tweezers] or a clean fingernail to peel the orange adhesive strip labeled with an ***A*** off the battery.

Step 16 - Image 2

Pull up on the orange adhesive strip to lift the battery out of its recess and swing it up to an upright position.

Although these adhesive tabs are supposed to make the battery removal easier, they may require some force. If you're having trouble removing the battery, you can apply [https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iOpener+Heating/25705|a heated iOpener|new_window=true] to the center of the display to loosen the adhesive underneath.

Peel the battery off the remaining adhesive.

Step 17: Remove the battery

Step 17 - Image 1

Remove the battery.

During reassembly, temporarily reconnect the battery to the motherboard to help align it correctly. Disconnect the battery after it is seated.

In case you're replacing the adhesive sticker with a new one, peel the battery's adhesive sticker off the midframe and clean the relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%). Let the alcohol dry before installing new adhesive.
