Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Prepare your laptop for disassembly
Allow your laptop's battery to drain below 25% before starting this repair—a charged battery may catch fire if damaged.
Unplug all cables and fully shut down your laptop.
Close the lid and flip your laptop over so the back cover faces up.
Step 2: Unfasten the back cover
Use a T5 Torx driver to remove the ten 3.7 mm-long screws securing the back cover.
Step 3: Loosen the back cover
The back cover is lightly secured to the motherboard by thermal pads. Depending on the age of your laptop, it may be easier or harder to remove.
Use a finger to pry up the right side of the back cover, starting at the Ethernet port cutout.
Step 4: Remove the back cover
Remove the back cover slowly, as to avoid tearing the thermal pads underneath.
Lay the back cover down on its rubber feet to avoid damaging the thermal pads on its underside.
Step 5: Soften the battery cable tape adhesive
Apply a [guide|25705|heated iOpener|new_window=true] to the battery cable tape for one minute.
You can also use a [guide|157348|hair dryer|new_window=true]—but be careful, as overheating the battery may damage it or cause a fire.
Step 6: Remove the battery cable tape
Be careful not to damage the battery with your tool.
Use blunt nose [product|IF145-020|tweezers] or your fingers to peel and remove the battery cable tape.
Step 7: Disconnect the battery
Use the flat end of a spudger to push the square tab on the battery connector and slide it out of its socket.
Step 8: Unfasten the battery
Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the five 5.3 mm screws securing the battery.
If stickers cover any of the screw heads, peel and remove them.
Step 9: Remove the battery
Remove the battery.
There's a delicate cable that might be adhered to the underside of the battery. If so, gently unstick it as you lift the battery.
