Step-by-Step Process
Step 1:
Power off the phone by holding the volume and power buttons simultaneously.
Insert the end of a paperclip or a SIM card eject tool into the small hole to eject the SIM tray, then remove it.
Step 2:
Slide an opening pick around the perimeter of the phone to break through and loosen the adhesive holding the outer case in place.
Use an opening tool to release the clips securing the front and back casing together.
Don't remove the case yet!
Step 3:
Use an [guide|11677|iOpener|new_window=true] for about 1-2 minutes to heat the adhesive on the Motorola logo so that it can be separated from the outer casing.
Heat the iopener for 30 seconds at a time, and let it sit on the phone for 1-2 minutes.
Hold your finger on the Motorola logo (where the fingerprint sensor is) and gently remove the plastic outer casing.
Step 4:
Use a Torx T5 screwdriver to remove nineteen 3.9 mm screws from the midframe.
Step 5:
Remove the plastic motherboard cover.
Step 6:
Place a spudger or an opening tool under the edge of the battery connector and pry straight up to disconnect it. Do the same to disconnect the large press connector next to the battery connector.
Remove the battery cable using an opening pick or tweezers. It should pop right off.
Slide a thin, ESD-safe pry tool or angled tweezers under the metal neck of the coaxial antenna cable connector (as close to the head as possible) and lift straight up from the board.
Step 7:
Place a spudger or an opening tool under the edge of the fingerprint sensor connector and pry straight up to disconnect it.
Set it aside.
Step 8:
Use a Torx T5 screwdriver to remove one final 3.9 mm screw from right above the battery.
Step 9:
Use a pair of tweezers or an opening pick to peel the tape covering the front camera and remove them both.
Be careful not to scratch the copper of the motherboard.
Step 10:
Us an opening tool to carefully pry the motherboard and remove it from the frame.
Remove the back camera from the old motherboard so you can use it with the new motherboard.
Step 11:
Place a spudger or an opening tool under the edge of the back camera connector and pry straight up to disconnect it.
Make sure to pry under the edge of the connector itself, and not under the socket on the board. Otherwise, you risk permanently damaging the socket.
Remove the back camera.
